I’ve seen a client switch suppliers over a single bad batch. The bad batch wasn’t even that bad by industry standards—it was within 0.5% of spec. But the supplier’s response was slow. The corrective action was vague. The client lost confidence.

That’s the hidden price of opaque quality assurance: it erodes trust slowly, then all at once.

The uncomfortable answer: Short-term trust vs. long-term alignment

I’m not going to tell you that every order needs third-party testing. That’s expensive and, frankly, overkill for standard products with established suppliers. But I will say that the cost of one verification failure can be more than the cost of testing for an entire year.

When this approach doesn’t work

Honestly? If you’re buying commodity industrial gases like standard oxygen or bulk nitrogen for non-critical applications, you probably don’t need this level of verification. The standard CoA is usually sufficient. The risk is low. The cost of testing catches up to the benefit.

But if your application is sensitive—pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics, advanced hydrogen systems, or anything with tight blend specifications—then trust-but-verify isn’t optional. It’s a requirement for managing process risk.

I’d recommend this approach for 80% of bulk gas buyers who are in regulated or high-precision industries. If you’re in the other 20%—say, basic combustion or low-tolerance applications—you can probably rely on standard documentation. But be honest with yourself about which category you’re in.

The bottom line

The best supplier isn’t the one with the cheapest price or the flashiest sustainability report. It’s the one whose documentation process aligns with your actual operational needs. It’s the one whose quality inspector—someone like me—can tell you, honestly, “Here’s what we test. Here’s what we don’t. Here’s where we rely on documentation. Here’s where we verify.”

If they can’t answer those four questions clearly, that’s a red flag. Not a deal-breaker necessarily, but a red flag worth investigating.
