I had about 3 hours to decide which way to jump. Normally, I'd run a full RFQ: three vendors, detailed cost breakdowns, volume guarantees. But there was no time. I went with a vendor I'd used twice before—small outfit, good reputation, but I didn't have deeper data on their logistics reliability.
In hindsight, I should have requested a full logistics audit from them. But with the production manager on the line, I made the call based on trust alone. And trust, as you'll see, has a shelf life.

Granted, this requires more upfront work. But it saves time later—and in my world, time is the only resource you can’t buy more of.
To be fair, the traditional approach still has value—some specialty gases don’t have a standardized supply chain. But for the 80% of cases that involve bulk or standard-grade gases? The efficient path wins. Every time.
What I'd Do Differently
If I could redo that August decision, I'd invest in better specifications upfront. But given what I knew then—nothing about that vendor's interpretation quirks—my choice was reasonable. The system was the problem, not the people.
Now, our company policy requires a 48-hour buffer for any critical gas delivery. We learned the hard way that the cheapest option is never just about the sticker price. It's about the cost of your time, the risk of delays, and the potential for expensive redos.
