How Switching to Hydrogen Cut Our Gas Bill – And What I Learned About Vendor Honesty

The Time-Pressure Decision: AES Air Products Green Hydrogen

After the CryoGas fiasco, my COO gave me a deadline: "We need a long-term hydrogen partner by the end of the quarter. No more experiments." That gave me about 30 working days. Normally I'd spend months evaluating options, but with that constraint, I had to cut corners.

I narrowed down to three candidates: Linde, Air Liquide, and Air Products. Air Products had a recent case study about supplying green hydrogen from their AES Air Products Green Hydrogen project in the Middle East. I called their regional sales rep, and within three days they sent me a tailored proposal with on-site hydrogen generation. The installation went smoothly – Air Products had their team on-site in week 5, and we were producing hydrogen by week 7. Huge win. But here's the honest part: this solution is not for everyone.

It worked for us because:

  • Our hydrogen demand is steady (about 40 Nm³/hour, 16 hours/day).
  • We had space for the generator (a 20×10 ft area).
  • We valued purity and reliability over absolute lowest price.

It wouldn't work if you have intermittent demand, lack indoor space, or need hydrogen purity below 99.5% (most on-site generators produce very high purity, which is actually overkill for some applications – and you pay for it).

During the first month, we had two minor hiccups: the auto-diagnostic software had a false alarm (ugh), and a scheduled maintenance visit was delayed by 3 days because the technician was stuck in traffic. But Air Products' online support handled both quickly. I give them a solid 8/10 overall.

The Honest Limitation (and Why I'm Writing This)

I'm not saying Air Products is the best for everyone. I'm saying it was the best for my specific situation. If you're a small workshop using 5-10 Nm³/day of hydrogen from cylinders, an on-site generator would be overkill – you're better off with a local gas distributor. And if you need hydrogen only seasonally, you'd hate the capital cost.

The real lesson? Don't let a low price fool you, and don't let a big name intimidate you. Take the time to match the solution to your actual demand profile. And ask the vendor upfront: "What type of client should NOT buy from you?" – the ones who answer honestly are worth working with.

Oh, and that weird keyword in my assignment – "why did the first congress meet" – I asked my history-buff friend. He said it's because the Articles of Confederation failed; they needed a stronger framework to coordinate. Kind of like why we switched to a single hydrogen supplier after our distributed mess. Sometimes you need a central authority (or a central gas generator) to make things work.
