I coordinate emergency gas deliveries for industrial gas customers. After 11 years and more than 200 rush orders, I’ve learned that the questions people ask in a crisis are very different from the ones they ask during a normal quote.
Most people think emergency gas is about finding a last-minute truck. It’s really about knowing your prime air products supplier before the phone rings. Here are the questions I actually get—along with honest answers. Some of them end with “yes, we can help.” A few end with “actually, this isn’t the right fit.” That’s important to know upfront.

1. Can you really deliver an industrial gas order in 24 hours?
Sometimes yes. If you need a standard product like nitrogen or argon, you have a compatible connection, and there’s a supply point within a realistic distance, same-day or next-day delivery is possible. In March 2024, a customer needed a certified gas mix 36 hours before a stress test. We worked with a local hauler, paid an $800 rush fee on top of the $4,200 base cost, and delivered with 20 hours to spare. The customer’s alternative was delaying a $12,000 project and paying a penalty.
But I won’t pretend this is universal. If you need a custom blend with a certified analysis and the supplier doesn’t already have it in inventory, 24 hours isn’t realistic. The first thing I ask is not “when do you need it?” It’s “what exactly do you need?” Because with the wrong spec, speed is just a faster way to fail.
2. What’s the difference between delivered gas and on-site gas generation?
Delivered gas means cylinders, tube trailers, or liquid tanks. On-site generation means a membrane system or PSA system at your facility. Air Products’ PRISM membrane systems—documented at airproducts.com—are a common option for on-site nitrogen. The conventional wisdom is that on-site is always cheaper. In practice—or rather, in my experience at food packaging plants—that’s only true if your utilization is high and your purity requirements are moderate.
If your demand is steady, on-site makes sense. If you have spikes, seasonal peaks, or applications that need high-purity gas at high flow, delivered gas is often the better backup. I’ve seen a facility install a nitrogen generator to “get rid of deliveries” and then still need a liquid tank because peak demand exceeded the generator’s output. At least, that’s been my experience. So don’t think of this as either/or. Think: on-site for the base load, delivered for everything else.
3. Should I buy a bigger tank to prevent running out?
Bigger tanks help with volume, not with peak flow. This is a classic mistake I made in my first year: I diagnosed a “runout problem” when the real issue was vaporization rate. The facility had plenty of product in the tank, but it couldn’t convert liquid to gas fast enough to feed a new production line. In 2022, that error cost us a $50,000 contract due to downtime.
Before you buy a bigger vessel, check the vaporizer size and the delivery lead time from your supplier. To be fair, if your problem is simply that you’re running low between scheduled deliveries, a larger tank may be the cheapest fix. But if pressure drops during peak use, tank volume isn’t the answer—vaporization capacity is.
4. Is Air Products’ Guardian shielding gas worth the premium?
It depends on the application, and I’m not going to tell you premium is always required. The Guardian air products line from Air Products is designed for welding jobs where gas consistency directly affects weld quality. If your welders are doing certified structural work or maintaining a procedure qualification, I’d recommend Guardian—or another product with an equivalent guaranteed analysis. Small shifts in oxygen or CO2 can change weld penetration and porosity.
If you’re doing general MIG welding on mild steel and rework isn’t a crisis, a standard argon/CO2 mix may be perfectly fine. Saying “premium isn’t always needed” sounds strange from someone who works with Air Products, but honestly explaining fit is how we keep clients. There’s no best gas—only the best gas for your weld spec, your quality requirements, and your budget.
5. Is hydrogen right for my facility?
Hydrogen is a real industrial gas, not a marketing slogan. It’s used for annealing metals, chemical processing, fuel cells, and electronics manufacturing. If your process already needs hydrogen, delivered liquid hydrogen is a mature supply mode. Air Products has been supplying hydrogen for decades, including large-scale industrial projects.
But if someone is pushing “green hydrogen” because it sounds good, ask three questions. First, what’s the actual carbon intensity of the production method? Second, what utilities does an on-site electrolyzer need—and do you have them? Third, what’s the total cost of ownership including compression, storage, and safety systems? I’m not 100% sure of the payback numbers for every site, but I know a project that “checks a box” isn’t the same as a project that makes sense. Hydrogen is right when the application and the numbers line up. Not just because it’s trending.
6. What should be in an emergency supply agreement?
A “white contract”—a standard-looking agreement that says nothing about emergencies—won’t help you at 3 a.m. I’ve seen it cost a client 14 hours of downtime in 2023 because there was no escalation path and no defined response time.
Before you sign, make sure your supply agreement includes these terms: a response-time commitment measured in hours, not “best effort”; after-hours contact names; a backup source plan; and a clear product spec acceptance process. Penalties matter less than the ability to reach a person who can make decisions. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. The remaining 5% were almost always tied to contracts with vague terms and no escalation contact.
7. How do I verify a supplier can really make a rush delivery?
Ask two questions: “Where is my gas coming from?” and “Who is doing the last mile?” A plant manager I respect, Mike Jones Jr., taught me this after a reseller promised delivery it didn’t have the inventory to support. When we asked where the nearest stocked warehouse was, the answer was “we’ll figure that out.” That’s a red flag.
A reliable supplier should be able to name the plant, the warehouse, or the distribution point and tell you who’s driving the truck. If they use third-party haulers, that’s not automatically bad—but your contract should require advance notice when transport is sublet. And ask for references from companies in your industry that have actually tested their emergency response. Word-of-mouth is good. Verified delivery history is better.
8. What’s the most overlooked factor in an emergency gas order?
Your own information. The fastest rush orders are the ones where the customer sends the exact product name, gas purity, cylinder type, connection size, pressure requirement, delivery location, and site access hours in the first message. It sounds basic, but I can’t count the times we’ve had to stop and ask for a UN number or a maximum inlet pressure.
One more thing: if you’re asking for same-day delivery, make sure someone is physically on-site to receive it. A delivery that arrives at 5:55 p.m. to an empty yard is not a successful delivery. (I should add: this is also true for normal deliveries, but nobody listens then.) Get your information together first. That’s the difference between a rushed order and a rescued one.
