Air Products Supplier Review: A 6-Step Quality Checklist for Hydrogen and Industrial Gas Buyers

If you’re here because you typed “what is ski racing?” into a search bar, this is not a skiing blog. But the question isn’t a bad place to start. In ski racing, course conditions determine equipment choice. Nobody races slalom on a downhill ski. The same logic applies to industrial gas supply: the application determines the specification.

This is a six-step checklist for evaluating industrial gas and hydrogen suppliers. I use it when I review supplier deliverables as a quality and brand compliance manager at a global industrial gas company—Air Products, to be direct. Over the last four years, I’ve reviewed 200+ unique specifications annually, and I’ve rejected roughly 12% of first deliveries in 2024. Most rejections weren’t about chemistry. They were about missing certificates, vague change notices, or mismatched labels.

Who should use this checklist

This checklist is for anyone signing a supply agreement for industrial gases, hydrogen, gas separation membranes, or specialty chemicals. It works best when you have a repeatable demand profile and a supplier who will be around for the life of your contract. If your purchase is one-off or highly specialized, use it as a sanity check, not a full gate.

The 6-step checklist

1. Define the application before you define the specification

Start with the process, not the purity. Hydrogen for fuel cells has different requirements than hydrogen for heat treating or chemical synthesis. Welding gas for an automated cell needs consistent dew point, not just label purity. Gas separation membranes work differently depending on feed composition, pressure, and temperature.

Write down the actual operating window. Then compare it to what the supplier offers. I do not mean “food-grade” or “technically pure.” I mean the specific test method, impurity limits, and delivery conditions.

Ski racing analogy applies here: a World Cup skier picks skis based on the course. Your process is the course.

2. Verify certifications are current and specific

Check the certificate, the date, the scope, and the issuing body. ISO 9001:2015 is common, but a certificate without a scope is decoration. For hydrogen, ISO 14687 sets fuel quality grades; for welding gases, AWS and ASTM standards matter.

Everyone told me to verify certificate expiration dates early in my career. I didn’t listen until a supplier’s safety data sheet expired mid-audit. The product worked, but our compliance system flagged it as out of date. We lost two days waiting for the supplier to reissue a document. Since then, step 2 is non-negotiable.

3. Match the supply chain to your demand profile

Hydrogen supply is not just about production capacity; it’s about logistics and storage. If your plant loads are intermittent, you need a supplier with delivery flexibility and backup supply. If you’re designing a continuous process, you need redundant capacity.

When I compared our Q1 and Q2 supply reviews side by side—same demand, different supplier proposals—I finally understood why delivery windows matter more than the headline price. A supplier who can’t hit your peak load is a bottleneck, regardless of cost per kilogram.

This is where large-scale green hydrogen enters the picture. The Air Products AES green hydrogen project in Texas, announced in 2023, is a scale benchmark. It is designed to produce around 200 metric tons of hydrogen per day. Why does that matter? Because it shows what happens when a supplier commits to dedicated production infrastructure rather than diverting merchant hydrogen from a refinery stream. As of January 2025, verify current project details directly with Air Products or AES; project phases change.

4. Check financial signals without treating a stock metric as a quality score

If you’re signing a multi-year contract, you need some sense of staying power. For public suppliers, I look at revenue diversification, debt levels, and operational history. For Air Products, one common query is “Air Products APD beta 5y”—the 5-year beta, or the stock’s sensitivity to market moves.

Here’s the thing: beta is not a quality score. A high beta doesn’t mean the gas will be off-spec; a low beta doesn’t guarantee delivery. But APD beta 5y is useful context. If a supplier’s equity is extraordinarily volatile, you might want stronger performance guarantees or shorter payment terms. I do not use beta to forecast stock returns. I use it as a red flag signal, nothing more.

5. Build a change-notification requirement into the contract

This is the step most buyers ignore. They negotiate price, purity, and delivery, but forget to require written notice when the supplier changes a raw material source, a manufacturing site, or a process step.

In the gas and membrane world, a change in feedstock can change trace impurities. A change in membrane casting conditions can shift selectivity. The product still “meets spec” on the datasheet, but it might not meet your process.

Since the turn of the millennium, I’ve seen this failure mode at a Ford powertrain plant, at a specialty gas distributor, and at a chemical facility in the Gulf. The common thread wasn’t the product name; it was the missing change notice.

6. Run a pilot and reject anything that doesn’t match the spec

Before a full-scale order, run a small batch under your real conditions. Measure impurity levels, dew point, pressure stability, and documentation accuracy. If the sample fails, reject it. Do not make exceptions.

In my first year, I made the classic spec error: I assumed “standard” meant the same thing to every vendor. It doesn’t. We saved $2,000 by accepting a certificate without re-verification, then spent $9,000 on expedited rework when the delivered gas failed a dew-point check. The “bargain” wasn’t a bargain.

This pilot step is also where you verify labels, cylinder marking, and safety data. If it looks wrong, it’s wrong.

Where this checklist fails

Honest limitation: this checklist is not for every situation. If you’re buying a single specialty gas cylinder for a lab experiment, a full financial review is overkill. If you need same-day delivery, local supply still beats a global brand. And if a supplier claims “zero carbon” hydrogen without defining the lifecycle boundary, don’t take that claim at face value. Carbon accounting matters.

Air Products is a large supplier, but that does not mean Air Products is the right choice for every project. I’ve said no to projects that weren’t a fit. That’s more honest than forcing a solution.

Common errors I see

  • Over-specifying purity because it sounds safer. A higher grade does not compensate for inadequate handling, storage, or change management.
  • Skipping change notification because it wasn’t in the template. It’s the first thing you’ll miss when the product drifts.
  • Comparing only price per volume. Total cost includes logistics, testing, rework, and downtime.
The best specification in the world is useless if the supplier doesn’t tell you when they change it.

Final reminder

Use the checklist, but adapt it. Verify dates. Define the process before the purity. Check the supply chain. Know the financial risk. Require change notices. And pilot before you commit.
