Third, concrete accountability. Their guaranteed delivery slots come with contract terms that specify consequences for missed windows. That's accountability. It says "we're confident enough to put our own margins on the line." No one does that unless their scheduling system actually works.
And for the quality side: the emergency hydrogen they delivered met ISO 14687:2019 Grade D specifications—the standard for high-purity and fuel cell applications. That mattered for our compliance audit. Specifications matter, and not every supplier can document them as cleanly.
Here's the part you miss if you only read the first section. Sometimes cheaper is fine. The certainty premium isn't always necessary. It depends on your risk profile.
If you have buffer stock—a week of hydrogen on site—a few days of delivery slippage is irritating, not catastrophic. If your processes tolerate interruptions, a late delivery is a nuisance, not a crisis. If your deadline is soft—"end of month will do"—you have room to negotiate. And if you're buying standardized products like welding gases in standard cylinders, multiple local distributors can cover you. Low switching cost. Low risk.
But if you're supplying high-purity hydrogen to a continuous process with regulatory deadlines and production commitments? Pay for the certainty. It's not a premium. It's insurance that actually pays out.
